Mid Drift Spring!!!!

Ever since I posted about my goal of incorporating more crop tops into my wardrobe & showing off my mid drift this spring and summer, I have been asked what kind of reaction I am receiving publicly when I wear crop tops? Great question. The fact that so many of my plus size sisters are worried about how people will react & try to hurt & shame me is very sweet, but also reflects the general fear & policing that surrounds the fashion choices large women make & the restrictions placed upon our bodies.

Let me preface this response by filling you in on the context of where I reside. I live in Los Feliz, near Silverlake, which has a sky high concentration of hipsters, trendsters, scenesters, whatever you want to call them. I don’t want to over-generalize, but my neighbors seem to be 20 to 40 something’s white, privileged, artistically inclined and very thin. It is common place for me to walk around my neighborhood & get gawked at, whispered about, & even have rude remarks shouted at me by cobardes in moving vehicles. This doesn’t happen every day, lets just say on average about once a month.

This is something that happens in most spaces and Silverlake is no exception, but what especially irritates me about the treatment I receive in my neighborhood is that these young people appear to be open to alternative lifestyles, lovers of art, and culture, yet here I am, a living and breathing Botticelli or Botero, & instead of thanking me for getting a glimpse of live art, free of charge without the inconvenience of visiting a museum, they treat me like trash!!!! Descarados!!! Philistines!!!! Go figure. 😁😜😉

All jokes aside, society dictates I should be ashamed of my body and especially of showing off my belly. In response to this, I have decided to completely shift my frame of mind. I am not asking for societies permission anymore!!! I will not be tamed, censored, or shamed into hiding! I am not asking for acceptance, my body is mine alone to do with what I please. I am showing off my mid drift precisely because it’s unacceptable, raises eye brows, & invites fuchi faces!!! I decided I am going to be in your face unapologetic, loud and proud 24-7, no matter how uncomfortable it makes people around me. Sometimes that will mean wearing crop tops, bright lipstick, colorful clothing and hair.

In fact, when people give me dirty looks I’m determined to stare and mirror a fuchi face back at them. I believe it is people with the greatest insecurities who truly hate themselves that are openly hostile towards me, by mirroring back their ugly faces I will accomplish two things:

1) Firstly, bringing to the surface the insecurities they feel within themselves as they begin to wonder why I am looking at them so rudely. If there is a booger on their face or if there hair is out if place?;

2) Secondly, giving them a chance to see how they feel when someone is rude & unkind towards them. ideally, they will begin to wonder if they should mind there manners, be kind, and respectful towards others lest they themselves get treated like pariahs.

In sum, yes people are whispering & scrunching their faces at me when I wear this crop top, but even without the crop top, it happens. I’m not in control of what people say or do. I can only control what I say and do. I’m not completely vulnerable because I have strategies in place to confront hostility by reflecting back dirty looks. I will continue to carry myself proudly and defiantly.
